Michiko Ishimure, going on a sit-down strike in front of the chisso corporation.
(the chisso minamata factory had brought a heavy pollution and consequently it rased the Minamata disease.)
Her "Bitter Sea/Kukai Jodo(Paradise in the sea of sorrow)" (this work had taken 40 years till it's finished.)won the highest praise as the requiem literature for Minamata disease,as one of diseases brought by the civilization.
Michiko Ishimure's "Kukai Jodo" was selected to the Collection of World literatures as only one Japanese writer's long work,by Natsuki Ikezawa.(aforementioned video was made when the collection published and she tells many beautiful things,,about the conversation with her doctor which became one of the motivation to write, I would like to translate again if I can soon...)
This collection includes many other writers who are already known worldwide.like novel prize winner, Mario Vargas Liosa,Guntar Grass. He selected Michiko together with such famous writers, because he thinks "Bitter Sea" is the best master piece in post war literatures.
"In her work, there is the past peace before the pollution in Minamata,so you can see how cruel(terrible) the disease is.Michiko Ishimure faced to the reality,Minamata disease. When one personality was confronted by the reality, one (new) philosophy will be born.therefore we can recieve the fruits like this.(Natsuki Ikezawa)"
-The Philosophy of "Minamata" is in conflict with the modern rationalism which think that "Relieve" or "Solution" can be done only by the compensation payment.
"Patients lived and took and ate fish simply, but they got the terrible disease. So they wanted to meet the most authoritative people of Chisso corporation or our nation(country),and they wanted to be said "You had a really difficult time till now,I can understand your pain" by them, from their heart. But, though we went anywhere, there wasn't such communication with heart,If there isn't the relief of spirit,Minamata can't be ended."(Michiko Ishimure)
When I was still fine,I went to Tokyo with patients.
At that time they said to me. "Michiko, though I went over to Tokyo,I finally couldn't know where the nation (called) Japan exists.
the nation Japan won't be made by others.
If we don't create,there won't be Japan.
The hope of human
though it is different from each of individuals, the minimun hope is to try to understand each other.
It's bitterest.. when we can't understand each other.
"Though she had been passed, there was the woman who's name was Eiko Sugimoto,She said to me before her death,
"Michiko,I finally decided to forgive. I forgive everything.I forgive the nation called Japan,I forgive the corporation called Chisso,I forgive people who have discriminated us.If I didn't forgive,I can't stand anymore.
Then I became to think, instead of everyone,we are suffured."
before her death,she also said,
"but Michiko,I want to live more."
then all of us live.
Instead of everyone, she was suffured,so she forgives,..she said.
Living with being forgiven by people suffered instead of us..
It is such a sin..isn't it?
She said ..she was being suffered instead of us,all of Japanese"
Q What do you want the government to learn?
----The people who live in Minamata had many good things (virtues) of simple and honest countryside people.
Minamata desease had torn it - their hearts, to the pieces..
In this world there are many people who simply live a day and only have a hope to live tomorrow like today too, many people who don't think to live as success people especially.
(The government don't understand/ or the desease broke up) the future of such people who simply live..
Living simply is an important thing, isn't it..?
*in other interview, she talked about Eiko too, probably.
I also learned everything from patients(like a Japanese politician Shouzou Tanaka, her philosophical father, who fought for the first time against the environmental pollution by civilization in Japan.) .
One heavy woman patient talked to me three years ago,
"Michiko,I finally decided to forgive.
I forgive (the offending enterprise) Chisso.
I forgive the people who were hard on me.
Having been spitted, told"Please put it there because your disease will infect" when I paid money during shopping,I regarded them as the enemies of my parents, enemy of all of human,
But I'll forgive everything."
She said "Because it was too painful,I prayed... or rather,I cursed.
But.. this is the sin of human.
I am one of human too.
Human's sin is my sin as well."
The ex-fisher woman who haven't read one of books of philosophy, had passed with saying such things.
Have there been a religionist who is greater than these words ever?
In Minamata, today's gods are being born."
a film about her,"Hana no Okudo e"
Okudo=Paradise,heaven in buddhism
Oku=a hundred million
